In January 2024, the Area Agency on Aging 1-B (AAA 1-B) changed its name to AgeWays. To launch their new name, they had planned to broadcast a recorded video segment on Detroit’s TV channel 7 (WXYZ). In this broadcast, AgeWays wanted to showcase a caregiver’s story.
I was selected to be that caregiver and was interviewed by WXYZ anchorman Keenan Smith.
At the end of the interview, the cameraman asked a very perceptive question: “KC, how have you changed in the last 10 years?” I did not have a very good answer and told him, “I am at peace with myself,” with only a few other points.
For the next few days, I reflected on that cameraman’s question, and I created a PowerPoint presentation documenting how I have changed over the last decade since the onset of Sumi’s Alzheimer’s in 2013.
The presentation is divided into three broad categories:
- Changes due to the passage of time
- Changes accelerated due to Sumi’s Alzheimer’s
- Changes ongoing for my healing and growing (life after Sumi)
