I was one of the 3 panel members on the June 24 webinar, Aging-In-Place and Senior Housing Options. The webinar was organized by the National Chrysler Retirement Organization (NCRO) and the Area Agency on Aging 1-B. NCRO’s has 5,000 Chrysler retirees as members.
Many times, we face an unplanned and unexpected situation and we try to deal with or manage as best as we could and most of our actions at that time were gut based due to suddenness of the events unfolding. As time passes and we have come to accept the reality, we look back and think what we did and why.
I was in a similar situation when the moderator asked us different questions in turn. The moderators asked me the following three questions:
- As a caregiver for you wife, describe how you had to modify your home as to assist you?
- What made you decide to stay in your home instead of seeking other housing for your wife?
- What advice would you give to other caregivers on how to balance caring for yourself while caring by your loved one?
My answers reflect the cumulative lessons learned as Sumi’s care partner over the last eight years.
